Remember to link between pages similar to your basic article with consistent links.

3.2. Optimize the permalinks of your pages and articles

In most cases, your post’s URL * should contain your keyword, so it’s obvious what your page is about simply by reading the link: URL or permalink. * URL is the string of words you read at the top of the browser, it is www.miosito.it which is written at the top on Chrome or Edge or another program to navigate.

Be careful that you should always try to keep short permalinks, clean & descriptive – do not put unnecessary words for the sake of it! Did you know that? You should use the Yoast SEO plugin to structure your titles! You can check the default structure of titles and page descriptions in your Yoast SEO plugin. There are two parts of the plugin that control them.

First of all, as soon as you install and activate the plugin, you get an “SEO” section in your WordPress dashboard. Go to SEO → Search Appearance and you will see a bunch of tabs for different types of pages on your site.

For each type of post and taxonomy, you can set up a template for the title – as well as templates for the description. For posts on my site it looks like this:

This allows you to use components and variables to control the behavior of page titles by default. Of course, this structure can be overwritten or set on every single page.

For example, in the image above you can see how I am automatically acquiring the element as the title of the page, this is a tool that helps me not having to manually write the titles from scratch for each page. All title and meta description variables are available and they are all listed and explained in the help tab on the page. Note: When using these templates, be sure to check that the title tags behave as expected when displayed on the site.

If they don’t, you may have a problem with your theme and you will need to check and select the “Force rewrite” checkbox in the SEO Yoast options. You can also follow these instructions (in English on the Yoast official website) to modify your models.

3.4. Use headers correctly

Headers are ideal for structuring content and helping readers process information in smaller chunks. WordPress transforms the headers you put into your content into their respective HTML tags (<h1>, <h2>, <h3> and so on).

Customizing and writing a meta description effectively can encourage users to click on results in the search engine, even if we are not positioned in the first position. It’s an advertisement and it’s your opportunity to impress the reader.

You have to write a captivating and informative description of the contents of your page for each page of your site is a good practice and offers you the opportunity to attract more visits. While it may seem like a lot of work to create descriptions for every single page and post, it is worth the effort.

3.5.1. We do not recommend automated descriptions

Some themes and plugins try to produce descriptions automatically, taking the first sentence of a post. This is an intelligent shortcut, but it rarely produces good descriptions. The first sentence of a post is often introductory information, which does not provide an excellent summary or a tempting announcement!

The only well-written description is the one made by hand and if you are thinking of automatically generating the meta description, you may also do nothing and let the search engine choose and control the snippet. Automatically generating a snippet is a “shortcut” but there are no real and effective shortcuts in SEO! If you don’t provide a description, generally the search engine will try to find the keyword that has been inserted on your page and will automatically select a string around that keyword. Google will highlight the searched phrase in bold on the results page. Automatically generated snippets (both from plugins and search engines) are rarely as descriptive or compelling as handwritten ones. Therefore, I recommend using the description field that you find in the Yoast SEO plugin to write a valid description.

Make sure the description pushes the reader to click and make sure it contains the focus keyword of your post or page at least once. Note: Search engines may choose to ignore the meta description if they think it is unsuitable for the page, or they may choose to show a customized description from the page content if they think it is a better solution. There is no way to force them to use your specific snippet.

3.6. Optimize your images and media

An often overlooked part when it comes to SEO on WordPress is the way you manage your images, videos, and multimedia content. To make sure search engines understand your images, you need to think about how to name and format your files.
